An apparently unknown vehicle struck and killed a horse while it was walking down the side of N.C. 27 Sunday night, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office said.
A motorist who was traveling down the roadway between 8 and 9 p.m. and stumbled upon the incident, Lee Hayes, talked with the Times-News about the scene Monday morning.
Hayes said he spotted a horse lying dead in the roadway with three other horses standing nearby, each with its own rider. A bystander told him the horse had gotten away from its rider, and a vehicle struck it. The incident occurred in front of Fox’s Fish Camp, located at 3115 E. Highway 27, according to a Sheriff’s Office report. Further details were not immediately available.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
