Troopers said speed was at least one of the contributing factors in a wreck that left two people dead Wednesday afternoon on N.C. 10 in the northwestern corner of Lincoln County.
Larry Cook, 42, of 2743 Lynn Mountain View Road in Vale, was one of the two who perished in the incident, according to Trooper R. Neal with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. The identity of the other individual is being withheld until family members can be notified.
Cook was riding in the front passenger seat of his 1995 Toyota pickup truck, headed west down N.C. 10, when the vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway, striking three culverts before overturning, Neal said.
Troopers have requested toxicology reports in the incident to determine whether alcohol was an additional factor in the crash. Neal expected the results to come back in a matter of days.
The truck was traveling between 60 and 65 mph in a 45 mph zone when it left the road, troopers said.
The NCSHP is conducting an ongoing investigation into the wreck.
Additional responding agencies included the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, North Brook Volunteer Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services.
