Deputies arrested a western Lincoln County duo on Tuesday for maintaining a marijuana-growing operation on their back porch, the Sheriff’s Office said.
An employee with Rutherford Electric Corporation reported the operation to deputies after he had gone to the suspects’ residence July 24 at 7346 Reeps Grove Church Road in Vale to turn off the home’s power, deputies said. It is unclear why the power had to be shut off, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Deputies charged both residents Phillip Matha Gantt, 26, and Haley Kristin Gantt, 24, with one count each of possession with intent to manufacture a schedule I controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and maintaining a dwelling or vehicle for a controlled substance.
During a search of the home, deputies said they located five total marijuana plants and seized two rifles. Phillip Gantt possessed the guns illegally since he’s a convicted felon, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Deputies additionally charged him with being a felon possessing a firearm and placed him under a $14,500 secured bond, which he’s since posted.
Haley Gantt has also been released from the Harven A. Crouse Detention Center on a $4,500 secured bond.
A Lincoln County jury convicted Phillip Gantt of felony breaking and entering vehicles in 2002, according to the North Carolina Department of Correction website.
