Driver doesn’t survive impact with tree

A Lincolnton man was prounounced dead at the scene after his vehicle ran off an area roadway and struck a tree Thursday evening, troopers said.

William Franklin Baker, 56, of 202 Arbor Run Drive Apt. H, had been traveling south on Curve View Road, in northeastern Lincolnton, just after 6 p.m. when his 1998 Jeep SUV veered off the left side of the roadway and through an intersection at N.C. 150, hitting a tree, according to Sgt. Brent Hipp with The North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Troopers have yet to receive word from a medical examiner regarding the cause of the crash or Baker’s cause of death, Hipp said.

The incident is the fourth wreck fatality in the county since January.
