Marguerite Willis Baxter
Marguerite Willis Baxter, 91, of Granite Falls, passed away on Wednesday, July 25, 2012 at her home.
She was born on February 12, 1921 in Cleveland County to the late Jessie Clayton Willis and Ava Wehunt Willis. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hillard William Baxter; a daughter, Rebecca B. Payne; a grandson, Jody Rector; brothers, Soloman, Esper, and J.C. Willis; and a sister, Pauline W. Carswell Richey.
She was a member of Hulls Grove Baptist Church and enjoyed artistic painting using oil, acrylic, and watercolors.
Survivors include a daughter, Nancey “Hillery” Baxter; a son, Michaell Willis Baxter, both of Granite Falls; grandchildren, John Rector, Michael Payne, Megan Baxter, Michelle Baxter, and Rob Payne; great grandchildren, Nicholas Rector, Rodney Payne, Robbie Payne, and Michael Payne; and a sister, Lou Willis Wehunt of Lawndale.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 28, 2012 at Bethlehem United Methodist Church cemetery with Pastor John Jernigan officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until 12 noon prior to services at Bass-Smith Granite Funeral Service, Granite Falls.

George Ennis Baxter Sr.
George Ennis Baxter Sr., age 80, of 1192 Mirror Lake Road, Lincolnton died Wednesday, July 25, 2012.
His funeral will be Monday, July 30, 2012 at 9 a.m. at St. Dorothy’s Catholic Church, Highway 27, Lincolnton. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Lincolnton. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Sunday, July 29, 2012 at Warlick Funeral Home in Lincolnton.
George was born February 10, 1932 in Bethesda, Md. to the late Clifton E. Baxter Sr. and Dorothy Pulman Baxter. He graduated from diesel mechanic and truck college in Davenport, Iowa. He was employed with Associated Transport, Burlington as a supervisor. He moved to Lincoln County in 1974 to work as a supervisor at Carolina Freight Carriers in Cherryville and retired in 1992.
George served in the United States Army from September 1949 to 1955 during the Korean War. Stationed in Bamburg, Germany, he trained soldiers to fight in Korea. He also served as a guard during the Nurnberg Trials of Nazi prisoners of war. George was also stationed at Fort Campbell, Ky. where he met his wife of 57 years, Joyce McDowell Baxter who was in the USO at Fort Campbell and a native of Nashville, Tenn.
George was a lifetime member of the 26th Infantry Division the “Big Red One”. An active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, he also was active in the American Legion, having served as Senior Commander and the Disabled Veterans having served as Commander. In 2004, he was named Veteran of the Year in Lincoln County.
George is survived by his wife of 57 years, Joyce M. Baxter of the home; four children, George E. Baxter Jr. of Charlotte, Ilda Baxter Rowland and husband, Russell of Ruffin, James E. Baxter of Lincolnton and Barbara Baxter Williams and husband, David of Green Castle, Pa.; six grandchildren, Wesley and his wife, Kimberly Rowland, John and his wife, Christina Rowland, George E. Baxter III (Trey), Nicole Williams, John Williams and Chloe Williams; four great-grandchildren, John Rowland Jr., Cole Rowland, Allison Rowland and Dillion Rowland.

Fred James Blackburn Jr.
Fred Blackburn, 82, of Alexis-High Shoals Rd., Dallas, NC died July 26, 2012 at home with his family at his side. Mr. Blackburn was owner/operator of Suburban Well Drillers for 50 years until his retirement. He was a US Army veteran of the Korean War, loved NASCAR and dirt track racing. Throughout his life Fred was known for his character, love of family, hard work and sense of fairness.
He was born on November 2, 1929 in the Blackburn community of Catawba County to Frederick and Sarah Wilfong Blackburn.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Rozella Reynolds Blackburn; sister, Josephine Blackburn of Lincolnton; daughter and son-in-law, Tina Blackburn Nardoci and Bruce Nardoci of Charlotte; daughter, Barbara Blackburn of Belmont; son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Dixie Helderman Blackburn of Dallas, NC; two grandchildren, David Blackburn and Heather Blackburn Meadows; two great-grandchildren, Julia and Lana Meadows.
Visitation will be Sunday, July 29, 2012 at Warlick Funeral Home from 1:30 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. The funeral will follow at 3 p.m. in the chapel. Entombment will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Lincolnton.

Fran ‘Lafay’ Bost Brewer
Fran “Lafay” Bost Brewer, age 81, of Cardinal Health Care, and formerly of 780 Clarks Creek Road in Lincolnton, died on Wednesday, July 25, 2012.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 29, 2012 at Leonard’s Fork Baptist Church with Rev. Robert Goins and Rev. Darrell Bost officiating. Inurnment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:30 p.m. until 3:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
Mrs. Brewer was born May 27, 1931 in Lincoln County to the late Paul J. and Ruth Owens Bost. She worked as a secretary for Lineberger Brothers.
She is survived by her husband, Adrian Brewer of the home; one son, Adrian Brewer Jr. and wife Cherie of Troutman; three daughters, Debbie Brewer Goins and husband Robert and Melanie Brewer Givens and husband Sheanan, all of Lincolnton, and Amie Brewer Coulter and husband Scott of Charlotte; one brother, Rev. Darrell Bost of Lincolnton; two sisters, Doris Clark and Freida Marley, both of Lincolnton; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Sallie Ann Hefner
Sallie Ann Hefner, 75 of Vale, passed away Wednesday, July 25, 2012 at Palliative CareCenter & Hospice of Catawba Valley after a period of declining health.
Born June 15, 1937 in Burke County she was the daughter of the late Marston and Dealie Huffman. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one daughter, Sallie Louise Hefner and a number of brothers and sisters.
Mrs. Hefner was a member of Philadelphia Baptist Church in the George Hildebran Community.
She is survived by her husband David Hefner of the home; two sons, Preston Hefner and wife Amy of Lincolnton, Jimmy Hefner of Vale; one daughter, Alice Cole of Lake City, Fla.; one sister, Jean Perkins and husband Johnny of Connelly Springs; five grandchildren, Dawn Malonney, Jimmy Hefner Jr., Lisa Poarch, Mitchell Higdon, and Dalton Hefner; and four great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held today at 3:30 p.m. at the Philadelphia Baptist Church in Hildebran with Rev. Doyle Holder, Rev. Doug St. John, and Rev. Kenneth Bryant officiating. Burial will follow in the Philadelphia Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
Serving as pall bearers will be Jimmy Hefner Jr., Travis Poarch, Danny Hildebran, Brain Hildebran, Tommy Stevens, and Dennis Brown.

Daniel Richard Ballard, age 82, of Newton died July 26, 2012.
A funeral service will be held on July 28, 2012 at 10 a.m. at Piney Grove Baptist Church, Claremont. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Piney Grove Baptist Church.
