The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office carried out its third drug major operation Tuesday night since Sheriff David Carpenter assumed office last year, filling an already overcrowded detention center with more alleged criminals.

“Operation Midnight Special,” targeted at apprehending 34 defendants accused of drug use across the county, followed “Operation .38 Special” in January and “Operation Rolling 50″ in August 2011.

Tuesday’s operation commenced after an 8 p.m. briefing at Sheriff’s Office headquarters in Lincolnton.

Lt. Jason Reid, head of the Sheriff’s Narcotics Division and S.W.A.T., said officers began their investigative efforts for this most recent round-up back in January and that a grand jury handed down indictments on June 11. Charges ranged from marijuana use to cocaine, heroin and prescription pill possession, among others.

Reid told the Times-News that the success of Tuesday’s operation and more than five-month long investigation stemmed from both tip line complaints and the “proactive, aggressive attitude” of his narcotics team.

“I’ve never worked with a more dedicated group of officers in my career,” he said.

Sheriff David Carpenter additionally praised the county’s drug task force team, referring to them as “a highly dedicated, energetic and trained” group who’s willing to work with a number of area agencies “to get the job done.”

Lincolnton Police Department assisted deputies in the operation, apprehending defendants with city addresses.

Since the new Sheriff’s Office administration took office in December 2010, 122 drug offenders have been pulled from the streets from drug round-ups alone, Reid said.

Carpenter agreed.

“During the last 18 months, more dealers have been arrested than any other time in our county’s history,” he said. “This has been the most focus (on drugs) that I have seen in my 29 years of law enforcement here.”

While Carpenter said drug users who are arrested typically end up back on the streets, he and his command staff are committed to lowering drug activity across the county.

“Our efforts show the seriousness of the drug problem in our immediate area,” he said. “Our aim is to put them (defendants) in prison, and if the courts would allow it, that’d be our ambition.”

He noted how drug operations are additionally meant to warn criminals.

“It sends a signal to them that we know their activity,” Carpenter said. “We want to conflict what they got going on.”

He expected the Harven A. Crouse Detention Center, already at maximum capacity with 135 inmates early Tuesday, to only greatly increase after the round up.

“We will be overcrowded again,” he said.

As of 1 a.m. Wednesday, more than 15 defendants had been arrested in the operation. A vehicle was additionally seized from a city residence on Auton Street.

Reid urged citizens to continue calling the tip line at 704-736-8422 “regardless of how minor they think the information or problem is.”
