Police said a woman was allegedly driving drunk when she collided with a police cruiser late last week at a popular Lincolnton intersection, totaling the city vehicle.

Kathleen Howard, 21, of 1289 South Aspen Street in Lincolnton, was charged with DWI and failure to reduce speed, according to Lincolnton Police Capt. Cindy Monday.

Howard rear-ended Officer Chad Lail’s police vehicle with her 2000 Ford Explorer just before 1:30 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of Timken Drive and North Generals Boulevard, a report said.

Both drivers were transported to Carolinas Medical Center-Lincoln for observation and treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

Capt. Monday noted that the collision was so intense that it bent a shotgun located inside the patrol vehicle’s trunk. The Ford Explorer sustained around $3,500 in damage, she said.

The agency said it does plan to replace the vehicle in the future.

Trooper Mike Futrell with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol investigated the wreck.
