Deputies recently apprehended a Nevada man, who was convicted of sexually abusing a child in Lincoln County more than a decade ago, and served him a warrant for failing to register as sex offender for the last five years.
The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office said they’ve been searching for Matthew Ezekiel Stager, 40, of 110 JD Walker Street in Raleigh, Nev., since March 2007, when he apparently left the state.
Deputies said they located him in a Nevada jail, but state authorities there could not serve the Lincoln County warrant.
Stager was taken into custody on Wednesday and charged with one count of failure to register as a sex offender.
According to the North Carolina Department of Correction website, Stager was found guilty in 1999 of indecent liberties with a child, a crime for which he spent nearly two years in prison.
He also defaced and removed landmarks in the county that same year, NC DOC showed. The offense was labeled a misdemeanor.
Stager remains in the Harven A. Crouse Detention Center under a $25,000 secured bond.
