Deputy hospitalized after crashing during response to break-in

Staff Writer

While on his way to a break-in call Wednesday morning on the county’s northwestern end, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputy James Owens hydroplaned and struck a utility pole near the city water plant, totaling his patrol vehicle and sending him the hospital.

Shortly after midnight, Owens received the alarm call regarding a break-in at Hampton’s Wrecker Service on Reepsville Road, according to a department press release.

Although deputies later learned that culprits never accessed the property, Owens was already on his way to Carolinas Medical Center-Lincoln for head lacerations he sustained in the wreck while en route to the alleged crime scene, the release said.

Deputies said heavy overnight rain created dangerous conditions along the roadway, contributing to the crash.

In addition, power crews rushed to the scene after the vehicle split a utility pole located near the Lincolnton Water Treatment Plant, the release said.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol is conducting an ongoing investigation into the incident.
