County shop closes due to asbestos, lead paint

The Lincoln County Parks and Recreation and Public Works shop on West Church Street in Lincolnton has been temporarily closed due to the possibility of loose lead-based paint and asbestos flooring tiles within the building.
Closure of the shop, located at 330 W. Church Street, was announced by County Manager George Wood’s office Friday afternoon, citing a finding by the Fire Marshal’s Office of the potentially hazardous materials.
“The loose paint could pose an issue for employees, so the county has removed them and the equipment from this building,” Wood said in the statement released.
While testing of the two substances is conducted, employees will be working out of temporary facilities elsewhere, though their location is not specified.
Following the results from the testing, Wood noted that a decision will be made on how to proceed with any necessary cleanup or repairs.
