A small plane crashed along a private airstrip near the city’s southern end Sunday evening, fire officials said.
According to South Fork Fire Department’s Asst. Chief Thomas Raper, an ultralight plane crashed in an area located along the end of West Fork Trail near Laboratory Road in Lincolnton just before 9 p.m.
He noted how it was the first time in the department’s history that crews had to respond to an aircraft emergency.
Fire officials said the pilot was the only person inside the plane at the time and refused medical treatment.
“He was just shaken up more than anything,” Raper said.
Emergency Medical Services and South Fork Fire Department were the only two agencies to respond to the scene.
Fire officials blame the incident on a mechanical malfunction.
