Milla Putnam Griffith
Milla Putnam Griffith, 97, known as “Bill” to her family and friends, passed away May 2, 2012, in Columbia, S.C., with her family at her side. Milla was living with her daughter at the time of her passing. Prior to living with her daughter, her home was in Lincolnton.
One of ten children, Milla was born September 8, 1914, in Shelby, to Minnie Leona Threatt Putnam and Malcolm Everett Putnam. She was raised in Shelby and graduated from Shelby High School in 1931. Milla married Thomas Hunter Griffith of Davidson, December 21, 1940. During their time together they lived in Tarboro and Shelby; Little Rock, Ark.; Cartersville, Ga.; Greenville, Miss., and Corpus Christi Tex. before retiring to Lincolnton.
Milla was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Lincolnton where she was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Women of Church and was also a Deacon in the First Presbyterian Church.
In addition to raising three children, Milla worked in a number of secretarial positions throughout her life, retiring as a supervisor of the Claims Department for Sid Murray Insurance Agency of Corpus Christi, Tex.
Milla enjoyed her home and garden in Lincolnton. She was an avid reader and worked crossword puzzles “in ink.” She especially enjoyed watching her hummingbirds and cardinals come to the kitchen window while she had her morning cup of coffee. She loved that first summer tomato and she made a killer pound cake. Most of all she loved to spend time with her family and friends, and her beloved “Abby Dog.”
Milla was preceded in death by her husband Thomas H. Griffith Sr. of Lincolnton, her eldest son, Thomas H. Griffith Jr., of Kerrville, Tex.; and five sisters and four brothers, all of Shelby.
Milla is survived by her daughter Milla Carol Griffith of Columbia, S.C, her son, John Stephen (Steve) Griffith and his wife, Carol L. Griffith of Olympia, Wash.; daughter-in-law Sarah W. Griffith of Kerrville, Tex. and her grandchildren, Jennifer E. Griffith of Seattle, Wash., and Stephen Lance Griffith and his wife Melanie and her great grandson, Hunter Lance Griffith, all of Snoqualmie Pass, Wash.
The family will receive friends and family at the Cleveland Funeral Services from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. on Monday, May 7, 2012. A celebration of Milla’s life will follow at 11 a.m. in the chapel at the Cleveland Funeral Services, 2518 West Dixon Boulevard, Shelby, North Carolina.
Interment will be at the Mimosa Cemetery, Davidson, N.C., on Monday, May 7, 2012 at 2 p.m.
Evelyn Hoover Lackey
Evelyn Hoover Lackey, age 78, of the Brian Center, died on Wednesday, May 2, 2012.
Her funeral service will be 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 5, 2012 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church with Rev. Michael Collins officiating. Burial will follow in the Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. prior to the service in the North Wing of the church.
Mrs. Lackey was born November 7, 1933 in Lincoln County to the late Pinkney Austin and Ila Reep Hoover. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Donald Harold Lackey Sr. Mrs. Lackey attended Union High School, was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, and was very active in the Democratic Party. She enjoyed working for the Clerk of Court’s office in Lincolnton in the 70’s.
She is survived by a daughter, Lynn Lackey Moore and husband Dennis of Terrell; a son, Don Lackey Jr. of Hickory; a brother, Bill Hoover of Vale; a sister, Doris Eaker and husband Lester of Lincolnton; five grandchildren, Lela Lynn Lackey and husband Hugh Heldenbrand, Hershel Lackey, Elijah Lackey and wife Gina, Joseph Lackey, and Austin Moore; and a great-grandson, Ronald Harold Heldenbrand. “Granny” loved her grandchildren dearly.

Mary Sigmon Ramsey
Mary Sigmon Ramsey, age 93, of Lincolnton passed away Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at Brian Center of Lincolnton. She was born in Lincoln County September 11, 1918.
Mary was a devoted member of Riverview Baptist Church where she served the church in several capacities. Mary’s Mother, Nora Huss Sigmon, was a Charter Member of Riverview Baptist Church. Mary was a floral designer for many years at Drum’s Florist in Lincolnton. Mary was well known as a Special Occasion Food Caterer and for her many special recipes. Mary loved her family, her church, and the members of her extended family. Mary was a caring and compassionate woman.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Ramsey and her parents, Nora Huss Sigmon and Clarence Sigmon; sister, Ruth Sigmon Cherry; and brother, David Sigmon.
Mary is survived by her cousins, Harriette Carpenter Erickson of Ojai, Calif., Allen Aycoth of Gastonia, and Karen Johnson Bolick of Denver; nieces Teri Elliott of Fayetteville, Elaine Sisk of Lincolnton and Janie Ledford of Lake City, Fla. Mary’s extended family consisted of the Claggs, Mike, Betty, Josh, Courtney, Amy, Carly Suzanne and Quincy Katherine, and the Lattimore’s, Sam, Alene, Debbie, Jennifer and Mike.
Services will be held Friday, May 4, 2012 at 12 noon at Riverview Baptist Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. The interment will be in the church cemetery. Reverend Brown will officiate.
Memorials may be made to Riverview Baptist Church in lieu of flowers.
