A federal grand jury indicted a Maiden man Thursday on charges of cocaine possession with intent to distribute, according to the U.S. District Attorney’s Office in the state’s western district.

Kelly McClain, 30, allegedly possessed crack cocaine during a vehicle stop in the county in September, authorities said. Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies initiated the stop, a press release said.

McClain had a first appearance in federal court on Thursday and is expected to have a detention hearing Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Charlotte.

Special Asst. U.S. Attorney Erin E. Comerford of North Carolina’s western district is handling the prosecution.

Maiden Police Department is assisting the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office with the investigation.
