Feds aid investigation into fires

Federal authorities assisted local police and fire officials in investigating three fires that they believe were intentionally started by incendiary devices Thursday night in Lincolnton.

According to Chief Mike Lee with Lincolnton Fire Department, firefighters responded to an extensive vehicle fire on Bonview Avenue around 9:30 p.m. followed by two residential fires on Forney Avenue a short time later. The car sustained significant damage, fire officials said.

Lee revealed that while authorities were extinguishing the vehicle’s flames, they received report of a burning storage building at a home on the 600 block of Forney Avenue, but the night was still young for firefighters as they received word that a second residence down the street was additionally on fire.

The resident told fire officials that someone tried to set his garage on fire.

Both structures suffered minimal damage, Lee said.

Lincolnton Fire Department investigated all three incidents and was aided by Lincolnton Police, the Gaston County Fire Marshal’s Office and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

“We are handling these fires as being intentionally set,” Lee said. “We do not believe that there is any danger to the residents of the Forney Street Community or the city of Lincolnton.”
