Church official charged with rape

Staff Writer

A local church official is accused of sexually assaulting a teen girl in the county nearly a decade ago.

Brandon James Carter, 33, of 4294 Royal Oaks Drive in Lincolnton, is accused of raping a 13-year-old female at a Lincoln County residence in August 2004, deputies said.

The suspect and victim knew each other, according to a Sheriff’s Office press release.

Carter currently serves as the music director at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Cherryville, but was not employed by the church at the time the incident occurred, deputies said.

Carter faces one felony count each of statutory rape/sex offense of a 13, 14 or 15 year old by a defendant six years older and taking indecent liberties with a minor.

Carter has since posted a $25,000 secured bond.

The Times-News left a message Tuesday afternoon at the home of Mt. Zion Pastor Wayne Key. A call had yet to be returned at time of publication.
