The Lincoln County Apple Festival Board has begun the search for a local artist to design its 2012 T-shirt.
Joyce Dorsey of the county’s Cooperative Extension Office said she sent out a notice to art teachers at area schools on Feb. 1 to invite participation in the contest. However, any Lincoln County resident, of any age, may enter up to three designs, which must be the original work of the entrant.
The top designer will receive a $200 prize, with the second- and third-place designers receiving $100 and $75, respectively.
With this year’s festival the 40th anniversary of the event, Dorsey said they would like that milestone incorporated into the design.
Individuals who are interested in submitting designs have until April 1 to do so. The shirts will be worn by males and females of all ages and should include the words “2012 Lincoln County Apple Festival†and the artist’s signature.
Designs, along with contact information, should be submitted in person or by mail to the Extension Office on the first floor of the Citizens Center in downtown Lincolnton.
The festival board is also seeking nonprofit groups to coordinate the production and sale of the T-shirts. Dorsey said interested groups must submit an application and essay describing why they should be awarded the design, also by April 1.
The selected group will assume complete responsibility for having the shirts printed and will then sell them at two booths on the day of the festival, including one in front of the Citizens Center.
The group will also keep any profits made through the sale of the shirts, which will bear the contest winner’s design.
Applicants must explain how the funds from the sale will be used to help the community.
“It’s an easy way to make good money for nonprofit organizations,†Dorsey added.
She noted that some nonprofit groups selected in the past have made between $6,000 and $8,000, depending on “how much work†they put into it.
This year’s Lincoln County Apple Festival is set for Sept. 15. The chosen group will be announced by May 1.
