The Denver Fire Department is speaking out about one of its own who was recently arrested for inappropriately touching a child.
As previously reported, Landon Kirk McMahon, 20, of 4517 Catawba Burris Road in Denver, was charged Friday with one felony count each of first degree sexual offense (victim under 13) and indecent liberties with a child.
McMahon is accused of sexual misconduct with a 12-year-old family friend. The incident took place in the suspect’s living room sometime in January, according to deputies.
The Denver Fire Department has released an official statement about McMahon’s arrest.
According to public information officer Dion Burleson, McMahon’s been with the Denver agency as a basic EMT and firefighter since April 2011.
Burleson said that until the arrest, McMahon, who is currently on administrative leave pending a Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office investigation, had been in good standing with the department.
“He’s had no disciplinary issues,” Burleson said.
In addition, the agency’s never before encountered a departmental situation of this significance and size. “It’s uncharted territory,” Burleson said.
According to a press release, the fire agency plans to take no further disciplinary action against McMahon until the judicial process has been completed.
In addition, the release stated that the department “upholds the highest standards regarding the integrity and upstanding nature of each and every member.”
“We enter their homes during a critical time in their lives,” Burleson said of area citizens. He noted it’s important to gain the community’s trust.
McMahon has since been released from the Lincoln County jail on an $8,000 secured bond. He’s scheduled to make his second appearance in District Court on March 20.
