PUMPKIN CENTER — The North Lincoln Lady Knights fell 3-0 at home to the Burns Lady Bulldogs in soccer Thursday evening in both team’s season opener.
North Lincoln head coach Kelly Barney was anything but disappointed in her team’s play. She praised the Lady Bulldogs for their solid skills and challenge that they presented the Lady Knights for their first game of the year.
“My girls are gonna learn a lot from this game,†Barney said. “They didn’t get their heads down.â€
She also pointed out how the Lady Knights significantly stepped up to an opponent that defeated them 9-0 last season.
The Lady Knights started out the first half with possession of the ball but was quickly overtaken by the Lady Bulldogs’ unprecedented aggression.
Burns immediately took the ball down field and attempted the first goal of the night, but it wasn’t until the 11-minute mark that their shot proved successful and they lit up the scoreboard.
Burns continued to pound the North Lincoln goal during the first half with numerous saves from Lady Knights’ junior goalkeeper Reagan King. The Lady Bulldogs snagged a second goal at the 18-minute mark.
Junior Lady Knights’ forward Brooke Anderson battled for her team’s first goal but was pushed to the ground by an opposing defender at the 27-minute mark.
The half ended with the Lady Bulldogs’ 2-0 lead over the Lady Knights, however, the Lincoln County team proved much more hungry for a goal in the game’s second half following their opponent’s third match goal in the half’s first five minutes.
Junior forward/midfielder Abby Labar was a Lady Knights’ standout by seizing a majority of her team’s shots including a kick from the 18-yard line that flew over the goal and a free shot at the 37-minute mark that skimmed the goal’s right side.
While the Lady Knights suffered a Lady Bulldogs’ shutout on their home field, Barney said she’s less concerned with losses in the season’s opening non-conference matchups.
“Win or lose, we didn’t need the win on the books,†she said.
North Lincoln will take on the Forestview Lady Jaguars Monday at home.
