Paul William ‘Smokey’ Spencer

Paul William “Smokey” Spencer, 82, died peacefully on February 28, 2012, at Boger City Rest Home in Lincolnton where he had been a resident for several years. He was affectionately known as “PawPaw” by the kind staff who loved and cared for him.

Smokey was born in Kings Mountain on February 18, 1930. He lived all of his adult life in Lincolnton where he worked and retired with Roseland Textile Mills.

Smokey was a kind and gentle man who was best known for walking or riding a bicycle everywhere he went. He estimated that he had ridden thousands of miles on several bicycles through the years. He preferred “old fashioned” bicycles and would not have a ten speed, although he was sometimes seen pushing his bike up the long hills. The only other mode of transportation for him was walking.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Ollie Cook Spencer; father, Daniel Spencer; sister, Mary Lee Spencer Powell; brother, James Russell Spencer, and half- brother Donald Spencer.

He is survived by his sister, Geraldine Spencer Davis of Iron Station; half-brother, Charles Spencer of Maiden; half-sister, Muriel Spencer Paysour or Lincolnton; step-sister, Dorothy Spencer Payseur of Lincolnton, and two step-brothers, L.J. Spencer of Lincolnton, Carroll Spencer of Maiden and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at Warlick Funeral Home in Lincolnton. The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 1, from 10 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. in the chapel. Rev. Tim Spencer will officiate at the services. Burial will follow at Crouse Baptist Church cemetery.

Barbara Jane Hefner

Barbara Jane Hefner, 69, of Claremont, died February 27, 2012 at Palliative CareCenter & Hospice of Catawba Valley in Newton.

Born September 2, 1942 in Lincoln Co. she was the daughter of Margie Lutz Black and the late Cliff Haywood Black. She worked at Abernethy Laurels.

In addition to her father, Barbara was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Howard W. Hefner.

She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Ann Hefner; sons, Howard W. Hefner, Tony Dale Hefner and wife, Andrea Adams Hefner; sister, Sue Turpin; and brothers, Ray Black, Lester Black and wife, Cathy Black, Clifford Black and wife, Linda Hastings Black, and Jim Black and partner, Crystal Johnson.

A service of remembrance will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 1, 2012 at the Chapel of Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Cooley officiating. Burial will follow at Providence Memorial Cemetery in Catawba.

The family will receive friends tonight at Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home in Newton from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Maurnagh T. ‘Terry’ Wilcox

ANDERSON, SC – Maurnagh T. (Terry) Wilcox, 83, a resident of Anderson Place Summer House died surrounded by her family on February 25, 2012. Born inManchester,England, December 8, 1928 she was the daughter of the late James and Leontine Flynn.

Mrs. Wilcox came toMontrealin 1945 as part of the evacuation of children fromBritaintoCanadaduring the Second World War with her mother and brother. She met her future husband Robert D.Wilcox while he was working inMontrealwith his father. They were married October 1948.

Terry and her husband Bob had a vibrant ministry with the Central Carolina Presbytery, Presbyterian Church in America until his death in 1993. She was employed as a paraprofessional with Ernst and Young Accountants in Charlotte. Following her retirement in 1994 she worked with the 4-year old class at the Lakeshore Preschool inDenver,NCuntil 2006.

She was a blessing to all who knew her generous heart, quick wit, unconditional love, encouragement and patience. Terry was known as “T” by her family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and numerous “adopted” children. She leaves behind many very good friends

Terry is survived by her brother Michael Flynn and wife Joyce of Sydney, Australia; son David Wilcox of Anderson, S.C.; and daughter-in-law Cindy Wilcox of Belmont; grandchildren, Jonathan D. Wilcox of Greenville, S.C., Robert Ian Wilcox and his wife Lee of Camden, S.C., and Darby Wilcox Tollison of Greenville, S.C.; great-grandchildren, Lockaby Tollison, Kathryn T. Wilcox and Evelyn Wilcox. She was predeceased by her husband of 45 years, Robert D. Wilcox.

A Celebration of her life will be held Thursday, March 1, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Lakeshore Church, PCA, 8083 Hope Drive, Denver, NC.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Lakeshore Preschool, 8083 Hope Drive, Denver, NC, 28037.

Robert Eugene Bennett

Robert Eugene Bennett, 59, of Cherryville died Feb. 26, 2012.

Funeral services were held Feb. 28, 2012 at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church with burial in City Memorial Cemetery. The family received friends at the church from 1:30 p.m. until 2:45 p.m.

Carpenter’s Funeral Home, Cherryville served the Bennett family.


Anita Hallman Hiott

Anita Hallman Hiott, of Cherryville died Feb. 26, 2012.

Funeral services will be held today at 12 noon at Stamey-Cherryville Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at Cherryville City Memorial Cemetery.

Jerry Wayne McMurray

Jerry Wayne McMurray, 64, of Lincolnton died Feb. 27, 2012.

A private graveside service will be held at the National Cemetery, Salisbury. The family will receive visitors at the home, 3309 Quinlan Lane, Lincolnton on Mar. 3, 2012 from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m.

The Good Samaritan Funeral Home, Denver is serving the McMurray family.


David Sylvester Burris Jr.

David Sylvester Burris Jr., 65, of Kings Mountain died Feb. 28, 2012.
