Fire officials are investigating what started a blaze that incinerated a former Lincoln County grocery store Wednesday afternoon.
The incident occurred sometime between noon and 1 p.m. at a storage building, previously Rinks Grocery, located at 4376 Maiden Highway, authorities said.
Firefighters with North 321 said flames were leaping out of the building’s windows when they arrived on scene.
They noted that tankers were additionally called to the site to help extinguish the large-scale fire, which Fire Marshal Mike Futrell said appeared to have started in the ceiling area of the first floor before spreading to the second floor.
No one lived in the building, he said, and was currently being used for storage of tools and other household items.
Additional responding agencies included fire crews from Boger City, Lincolnton, South Fork and Pumpkin Center along with Lincoln County Emergency Medical Services, Lincoln County Rescue Squad and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.
The Fire Marshal’s Office is conducting an ongoing investigation into the blaze.
