A woman struck the county’s inmate transport van while she making an illegal turn on a city roadway Tuesday morning, city police said.

The incident occurred around 10:15 a.m. on Sigmon Road, according to Sgt. Willie Vaughn.

Vaughn said Beatrice Johnson was traveling down Sigmon Road when she decided to make an illegal U-turn back towards the direction of Boger City.

During the maneuver, he said she struck the sheriff’s inmate transport van, which was traveling in the opposite lane. Police said the van was headed to the Lincoln County courthouse and was carrying two deputies and five inmates. The deputy driving the van attempted to brake and avoid the vehicle, Vaughn said.

Vaughn estimated that each vehicle sustained at least a couple thousand dollars in damage.

“Her front end was demolished,” Vaughn said of the passenger vehicle.

No one was seriously injured in the incident. An elderly man in Johnson’s vehicle was taken to Carolinas Medical Center-Lincoln for non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to be OK.

Following the incident, the Lincolnton Fire Department assisted the Sheriff’s Office in prying open the van’s sliding door.
