VALE — The West Lincoln Lady Rebels completed a regular-season sweep of the East Lincoln Lady Mustangs with a 52-35 win on Tuesday.
Molly Leatherman led the Lady Rebels in scoring with 15 points while Erica Webb posted 12 points and was a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line. East Lincoln (5-13, 2-7 SPC) was paced in scoring by Akeyla Forney, who put 20 points on the board for the Lady Mustangs.
The Lady Mustangs turned the ball over 12 times to the Lady Rebels (7-10, 6-3 SPC) on steals, all in the final three quarters.
“We’ve been working on our defensive intensity,” West Lincoln head coach Holly Specht said. “For the past couple of games they’ve started playing harder and getting into the passing lanes. At the end of the game those steals made a huge difference.”
West Lincoln had an 11-4 lead midway through the first quarter, but the Lady Mustangs closed the gap with a free throw by Sidney Messmer and five points from Forney, including a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
East Lincoln forced a one-point game through the majority of the second quarter, but the Lady Rebels pulled ahead with a 6-0 run moments before halftime.
The Lady Rebels outscored East Lincoln 30-18 in the second half, more than doubling their first-half totals.
“I feel like we’re finally starting to stay in shape in the fourth quarter of our games,” Specht said. “The girls are getting to where they can push the ball and run it down the court.”
West Lincoln has five games left in the regular season, none of which will be particularly easy, and travels to Cherryville to take on the Lady Ironmen on Friday. Specht said her team, in the midst of a four-game win streak, is starting to play cohesively before the conference tournament in mid-February.
“The girls have confidence now,” she said. “It’s great to win four in a row. We don’t have easy games the rest of the season, but I told the girls that if they can go out there and play hard and hustle they can win games.”
