‘Christmas Angel’ pays off power bills

National newsmedia outlets recently reported on the number of mystery donors who visited retail stores across the country this year, paying off people’s layaway bills. Lincoln County is no exception when it comes to holiday generosity.
According to Linda Garner, office service representative for Rutherford Electric, one local man has covered the cost of area families’ electric bills for the last three holiday seasons.
Rutherford employees and residents alike call him the “Christmas Angel,” Garner said. However, the man wishes to remain anonymous, she added.
She noted that this year, he donated the money with his wife and daughter by his side. Each year he donates $2,000 in funds, and Rutherford officials choose which families will receive the money. The funds blessed a total of 14 families this year, Garner said.
“It’s nice to let them know there are angels out there,” she noted.
She particularly revealed the emotional response of one recipient whom the “Christmas Angel” blessed on Monday.
“Had he not came, she would have been cut off,” Garner said of the woman’s home electricity. “She said she was gonna cry.”
Garner also pointed out how many of the recipients they choose to help have family members who have suddenly died, lost work or are just “down on their luck,” and are no longer able to afford their monthly bills.
By bringing along his daughter this year, the “Christmas Angel” hoped to teach her the importance of giving, Garner noted.
“He wanted his daughter to understand,” she said. “The only thing he said was that he wished he could help more. He’s very good.”
