Roundup nets more than 50 drug suspects

JENNA-LEY HARRISON
Staff Writer
Lincolnton Police have been calling on assistance from various local law enforcement agencies to assist them in a 16-day hunt of nearly 100 offenders wanted on more than 400 drug-related charges.
The effort, dubbed “16 Days of Christmas,” was purposely drawn out during a more than two-week period in order to preserve space at the county jail, according to a Police Department press release.
While more than 50 suspects have been taken into custody, several remaining individuals have yet to be charged and will not be arrested until a later date, authorities said. Some of the wanted suspects are currently serving previous sentences in a state correctional facility.
Police said they carried out the undercover investigation that led to these arrests from March through October, during which time, they acquired warrants on nearly 90 individuals wanted on more than 300 charges, a release said. Authorities noted that they were made aware of additional drug users through prior undercover operations.
Lt. Brian R. Greene, head of Lincolnton’s criminal investigation / narcotics division, and Narcotics Det. Jason Munday worked together to “spear-head” the operation. In particular, Munday contributed 1,000 hours of investigative work throughout the undercover operation, authorities said.
Agencies who’ve assisted Lincolnton Police with the roundup’s arrests include police departments in Maiden, Charlotte, Conover, Newton and Gaston County, along with sheriff’s authorities from Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Catawba and Rockingham counties. North Carolina Probation and Parole also had a hand in the operation.
Anyone with information on the 37 remaining offenders is asked to contact Crimestoppers at (704) 736-8909 or the Lincolnton Police Department at (704) 736-8900.
