An Iron Station man, who was found guilty of a sex crime more than a decade ago, recently accessed a social networking site, leading to his arrest, deputies said.
On Dec. 12, Van Williams, 45, of 1848 Brevard Place Rd., was charged with one felony count of sex offender use of a social website.
Authorities said he unlawfully accessed Facebook, a site that Williams and other registered sex offenders are not permitted to use since minor children can become members and maintain personal Web pages.
He has since been released from the Harven A. Crouse Detention Center on a $3,000 secured bond.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice’s national sex offender registry website, which said that Williams also goes by the alias “Christopher A. Ross,†he was found guilty of sexually assaulting a 9-year-old child in Dekalb, Ga., in January 1996. The site did not list the victim’s sex.
