Firefighters: Calls to collect money a scam

The Lincoln County Firefighters Association is warning area residents of a phone scam that’s fraudulently using the group’s name to collect money for people who don’t have smoke detectors in their homes.
Authorities with the LCFA noted that they have not and will not request money from area residents for the purpose of purchasing smoke detectors.
A press release said that only individual fire departments distribute such items to those in need.
While the recent solicitation for smoke detectors is fake, fire officials said, the county association does make calls to businesses each year, seeking advertisements for their annual Fire and Rescue calendar.
In addition, the LCFA seeks donations from residents by mailing letters with their logo on it.
Authorities said all other solicitation in the fire association’s name is a sham.
A press release noted that such “fraudulent acts…are unacceptable and, charges will be filed and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
Individuals who receive the fraudulent calls are asked to contact the Lincoln County Fire Marshal’s Office at (704) 736-8516 or the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office at (704) 735-8202.
