Authorities have arrested a Vale man and are searching for a second suspect accused of beating an individual with a baseball bat last month, sending the victim to the hospital.
Michael Shane Carver, 28, of 7490 Palm Tree Drive, was arrested Friday in connection with the assault, which occurred several weeks earlier on Oct. 5, deputies said. He faces one felony count of assault with a deadly weapon, inflicting serious injury.
The victim, Dwayne Craig, had been walking along the roadway in an area located in the 2600 block of Cat Square Road in Vale when two men in a pickup truck approached him and “threatened him,†authorities said.
The suspects pursued Craig into a nearby wooded area and assaulted him with both a stick and baseball bat, deputies noted.
Craig sustained significant injuries to his head and torso area and was taken to Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory for treatment.
The victim told authorities he didn’t know the men and that he was able to flee the suspects and call 911 at a nearby residence.
Authorities have yet to identify a second suspect in the incident.
Carver was convicted of at least one felony offense in the state in 2002 when he was found guilty of drug possession in Graham County, North Carolina Department of Correction records show.
He has since been released from the Lincoln County jail on a $20,000 secured bond.
