Lincolnton High School Tony Worley recently announced that Gracie Turner and Katie Reeder have been named Commended Students in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program.
Around 34,000 Commended Students nationwide are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. These students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2012 competition by taking the 2010 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
â€œThe young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,â€ said a spokesperson for NMSC. â€œThese students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation.â€
Navy Seaman James R. Barnwell, son of Gayle and Keith Barnwell of Granite Falls, is studying at the U. S. Navy Presidio linguistics school in Monterey, California. A 2008 graduate of South Caldwell High School, Barnwell is the grandson of Rev. and Mrs. Jack Rhyne of Lincolnton and Robert Barnwell of Hudson.
