Deputies: K-9 unit sniffed out drugs at traffic stop

Two Gaston County men were arrested Tuesday afternoon after deputies found a half pound of marijuana inside their vehicle following a traffic stop on U.S. 321.

The Sheriff’s Drug Interdiction Criminal Enforcement team (DICE) stopped the suspects’ vehicle near Exit 24 after a press release noted that the driver violated a traffic law.

A K-9 unit detected the presence of an illegal substance inside the vehicle, and a search turned up marijuana and more than $1,000 in cash, deputies said.

Both Matthew Dale Leonard, 25, of 1013 Farewell Drive in Gastonia, and Bengy Eric Heavner, 48, of 1008 Plum Tree Circle in Bessemer City, were each charged with felony count of conspiracy and possession with the intent to manufacture, sell and deliver a controlled substance.

Each suspect remains in custody in the Harven A. Crouse Detention Center on secured bonds of $10,000 apiece.

In their first court appearance, their case was extended until Thursday.
