Carolinas HealthCare System opened a new pediatric office in Lincolnton on Monday.

According to a CHS statement, Pediatric Medical Associates will provide primary care for infants, children and adolescents and offer services such as “routine care, minor injury treatment, 24-hour phone coverage, immunizations, school and sports physicals and chronic illness prevention and management.”

In the press release, Pete Acker, president of Carolinas Medical Center-Lincoln, stated, “With this new pediatric practice, Carolinas HealthCare will be better able to serve the growing infant, child and adolescent care needs of Lincoln County residents.

“The practice, as part of Carolinas HealthCare, will work closely with CMC-Lincoln and, in particular, the new pediatric hospitalist we’ve hired, to provide patients with a high quality, more coordinated care experience.”

Dr. Jermeliah Martin and Dr. Ankur Shah, who are both board-certified pediatricians with experience working in large children’s hospitals and community clinics, will lead patient care at the practice.

Heather Anderson, public relations specialist for Carolinas HealthCare System, confirmed that the office will have eight employees at full capacity.

Martin received her medical degree from Meharry Medical School and completed her residency at Indiana University. She is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Medical Association and previously served as resident advisor for the Student National Medical Association.

In the announcement, she said, “Our goal is to help strengthen and maintain the health of families.

“We look forward to caring for and working with Lincolnton families for many years to come.”

Dr. Shah received his medical degree from St. George’s University in Grenada, West Indies, and completed his residency at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando, Fla., where he also served as chief resident in pediatrics.

He is also a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the North Carolina Medical Society. He added in the statement that they were “ … proud to be able to provide comprehensive pediatric care more conveniently than ever before in this area.”

Located on Clark Drive, about three miles from CMC-Lincoln, the new practice is affiliated with both CMC-Lincoln and Carolinas HealthCare System.

The office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
