NCSU prof wins nation’s top technology prize

RALEIGH (AP) — President Barack Obama has named a North Carolina State University professor as one of the winners of the country’s top prize for technological achievement.

The White House press office says Obama announced the award Tuesday.

Professor B. Jayant Baliga (Bal-IG’-uh) received the National Medal of Technology and Innovation along with four other inventors around the country.

Baliga was honored for inventing and developing the Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor. It’s an energy-saving semiconductor switch that’s extensively used in transportation, medicine, consumer goods and other industries.

N.C. State says that the improved efficiency from using the device also significantly reduces carbon dioxide emissions.

Baliga says it’s an honor to be recognized for his work.

The winners will formally receive their awards at a White House ceremony later this year.
