Rebels advance

VALE — The West Lincoln Lady Rebels basketball team had three players in double figures as they knocked off the No. 5 seed Cherryville at home 61-53 on Monday.
West Lincoln’s Beth Pittman (18 points, seven rebounds, six steals and four blocks), Kayda Caldwell (14 points, eight rebounds) and Jamie Harkey (12 points, five rebounds) combined for 44 of the teams’ 61 points.
“I was happy I got good production out of his senior tandem of Kayda and Beth,” he said. “Both were good leaders on the floor while the game was close.”
Leading 39-26 at halftime, Sain said he was impressed with Harkey, a freshman, who came in big in the third quarter where the Lady Rebels went on a 23-5 scoring output.
“I was really impressed by the play of freshman Jamie Harkey in the second half of the game,” he said. “She scored all 12 points and got all five rebounds coming off the bench in the second half.”
Sain said the third quarter has been the charm for the Rebels of late, as they’ve outscored their opponents significantly in the opening of the second half and earned victories.
“We made some good halftime adjustments to stop Cherryville from scoring inside and that set up our fast break chances and gave us a chance to get the game up and down the court,” the Rebels coach said.
Ariel Bumgardner (14 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 blocks) and Lacey Martin (15 points and 3 rebounds) led the way for Cherryville, which finishes the regular season with a 11-14 record overall.
The Lady Ironmen committed 11 turnovers and 19 fouls while Danielle Whistnant was held scoreless for the game.
West Lincoln, the No. 4 seed, (17-7) will travel to Draughn to take on the top-seeded Lady Wildcats in the semifinals of the Southern Piedmont Conference Tournament today at 7 p.m.
