A fire destroyed nine wooden tents at the historic Balls Creek Campground off Buffalo Shoals Road in Catawba County Friday afternoon.
The Denver Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire and engine 14 was on the scene in less than five minutes of the 5:49 p.m. call. Seven departments and nearly 100 firemen responded to assist with controlling the fire.
Three wooden tents suffered moderate fire damage and three other tents suffered only minor damages.
Friday’s fire was the second fire reported for the campground this year. On Feb. 12 of this year, an arson fire destroyed three wooden tents at the Balls Creek Campground.
Catawba County fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause of Friday’s blaze.
