17 apply to become next school superintendent

The Board of Education will conduct interviews Saturday for the superintendent of schools position vacated by current leader Jim Watson.
According to Asheville attorney Dean Shatley, who is helping the board coordinate the replacement search, the district received 17 applications before the May 15 closing date.
The board will interview five prospective applicants at a specially-called meeting Saturday morning, which will be held at Blum Industries, said Shatley.
“They may choose a person from this first round or they may choose to do a second round of interviews,” said Shatley.
Besides North Carolina residents and one internal candidate, Shatley said the board also received applications from Virginia, Ohio, Florida and South Carolina.
Board members met once last week and Wednesday during special-called meetings to review the applications before the interview process began.
Shatley said that the board hopes to extend a job offer to a candidate by June 15, with an expected start date of around Sept. 1 to allow the chosen candidate time to negotiate out of any contracts.
An interim superintendent would be appointed after Watson’s retirement.
“We had a very strong pool of applicants and it’s going to be a tough decision for the board,” Shatley said.
