Dancer combines her art with film

Award-winning Chinese dancer Yu Wei forms her solo dances around nature. Her program includes “Bird,” “Moon,” “Snow” and “Smoke” as well as “Lotus,” a dance in which Wei shapes her body like a flower blooming.
“She’s like a contortionist,” said Rick Ramseur, president of the Lincoln County Concert Association. “We were blown away by the DVD presentation.”
Wei perform Thursday at the Lincoln Cultural Center at 7:30 p.m.
The performance includes traditional, folk, ballet and modern dance. Wei has had a long career in China performing as a solo artist with top companies.
She now lives in Philadelphia with her husband, Jared Martin, better known as “Lusty Dusty” from the ’80s television show “Dallas.”
Martin and fellow filmmakers Geoffrey Richman and Jeremiah Zagar created interval films to go along with Wei’s performance.
Between each dance, the documentary shorts will explain the cultural background of the dances.
These films also give Wei a chance to change costumes for each of her dances.
“We think it’s going to be an educational as well as artistic event,” Ramseur said.
The program will be performed Thursday afternoon for students at Pumpkin Center Middle School who are studying China. It is sponsored by First Federal Savings Bank.
“I think it’s important for students to see Western dance is no the only kind,” Ramseur said.
Wei’s performance closes out the Concert Association’s 2006-07 season, which Ramseur deems a success.
“Overall, I’ve been pleased,” he said.
The association is currently doing its membership drive. The first performance of the 2007-08 season will take place in October.
An adult membership is $40 for the season, which is up $5 from last year. For those who sign up for a membership before April 15, however, the cost is $35.
