The best way to beat the heat

Since the start of summer vacation this week, children have made good use of the Lincolnton Recreation Pool’s extended hours.
“It’s hot, and they like the water because it’s freezing,” said Tuesday Gash with the Country Club Children’s Academy.
Located at Betty G. Ross Park, the public pool is open to everyone in a bathing suit. It costs $2 per person, and hours are Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sunday 1 – 5 p.m.
Of course, there are a few rules – no running, no diving off the side and no alcohol or glass bottles.
“We just want it to be a nice, friendly atmosphere,” said Erma Deen Hoyle, director of the Lincolnton Recreation Commission.
There’s also a new rule this year – no smoking. That includes on the side of the pool and in the concession stand. Parents had become concerned about second-hand smoke.
None of these rules, however, take away from the fun children have at the pool. They can jump off the diving board, eat at the concession stand, or lounge in the sun.
Of course, there’s one thing everyone loves the most.
“I just swim,” said Daniel Mathis, 8, who was at the pool Thursday.
There’s one more perk – no homework.
“It’s a lot better than school,” said Courtney Brock, 11, who was at the pool Thursday. “We don’t have to learn or anything. We just get to have fun.
