A group of local Lincoln County residents joined together at The Oaks Apartment complex, 101 Arbor Run Drive, Lincolnton, April 22 to celebrate Earth Day with a community planting. Additional participants came from as far as New York State with each participant donating a tree, shrub, flowering plant or bush, or ground covering suitable for planting in Lincolnton’s climate. After a brief welcome by Wendy Hutchinson, who organized the event, shovels and trowels were put to use by planters. Digging began at 10 a.m. and all plantings were completed by noon.
The various plants, shrubs, and trees donated and planted by the participants included: Bird’s Nest Blue Spruce, Peony, Bleeding Heart, Gerber daisies, Hostas, Foxglove, and various other plantings and ground coverings. Even birdhouses were donated including one being crafted and painted by a local artist.
