Lincolnton will open the 2A State Playoffs against North Rowan (8-13), the No. 2 seed from the Central Carolina Conference, during the regular season.
And in some ways, Wolves’ head coach Bob Cowie will feel he’s looking in the mirror.
“They’re similar to us, as far as size, very athletic and not a very big team. I perceive them to be a similar-look team to what we are,†he said.
Despite falling to East Lincoln, for the third time on the season, in the Southern Piedmont Conference tournament, Cowie believes his team will suffer no ill-effects.
“I would think we would be ready. We have as good of an opportunity that you can ask for to play a team with a sub-.500 record,†he said. “You couldn’t ask for a better opportunity than that,†he added.
Was Cowie disappointed with his team’s flat play against the Mustangs?
“I wasn’t necessarily disappointed. I thought we got beat by obviously a better basketball team. They beat us three times, but we’re going to look forward to Tuesday night, not dwell on the past,†he said. “It’s a new part of the season and we’re looking forward it,†he added.
Senior Lance Friday won’t play Tuesday against the Cavaliers after sustaining a severe sprain to his left ankle against the Mustangs in the closing minutes. P.J. Hamright will get the start in his place.
Matt and Nate Wright will also receive more minutes.
“He’s (Matt) had limited minutes, but the games where he has gotten some many minutes, he’s done some productive things. And with the injury to Lance, he’s going to have to play more,†Cowie said. “He’s certainly one of the hardest workers that we have. He works hard in practice and when he gets in the game, he’s not going to try to do too much,†he added.
If the Wolves are able to take care of business, they will face highly-touted Forest Hills Thursday in the second round.
“I feel like if we have play up to our capabilities, there is a great chance we can win. If we don’t, there is a great chance our season will come to an end,†Cowie said.
