Rebels back on track

Christmas break, the West Lincoln wrestling team began their new conference schedule on Tuesday night against the South Iredell Vikings.
The Vikings, ranked as one of the top seven 2A teams in North Carolina by “Mat News”, a newsletter dedicated to North Carolina wrestling, came to West Lincoln hoping to spoil the Rebel’s conference opener, but the No. 8 team had other plans.
Leading off the Rebels at 140lbs. was Senior Captain Matt Avery. With a third period pin over Jack Jefferies, he put West Lincoln ahead 6-0. Avery said, “It was important to start the night off right. I knew how important the match was towards our conference title we want to win this year.”
Tyler Wilfong, 145lb Senior Captain, continued to add to the lead as he scored a major decision over Dewey Bustle with a score of 13-0.
With the momentum swinging towards the Rebels, Logan Shronce stepped on the mat with Matt Murdock at the 152lb. weight class. Shronce scored a major decision over Murdock with a score of 14-5.
The Vikings’ 160lb. Josh Miller won a hard-fought battle with West Lincoln’s Senior Captain James Pearson, with a score of 2-1.
With the Rebels leading 14-3, 171lb. Randall Neal decisioned Travis Greer 14-9 to add three more points to West Lincoln’s lead.
Johnny Walker, Ethan Peterson, and Clay Heafner continued to add to the lead. All three wrestlers scored pins for the Rebels to give them a 35-3 lead.
South Iredell’s 103lb. Jacob Belk pinned Freshman Chris Long to give the Vikings 9 points, but the Rebels were quick to answer. Brian Sailors and Matt Whittle added 12 points to the score when they pinned in the 112lb. and 119lb. weight classes respectively.
The Vikings’ Pedro Martinez scored a decision against Jack Wombough in the 125lb. weight class with a score of 4-1. Brad Owens of West Lincoln pinned Daniel Cox at the 130lb. weight class to spread the score to 53-12.
Ending the night, David Wiles edged out Payden Houser in the last 10 seconds to score a 6-4 decision.
Coach Butch Ross was very pleased with tonight’s results. He stated, “We wrestled real well. The boys went after it really hard. South Iredell is a good team and a well-coached team. All of our boys gave it their all.”
With this win, the Rebels improve to 20-9 on the season. They will be in action again on Friday night at East Lincoln at 6:00 to take on the Mustangs and South Point Red Raiders.
