Avery named best wrestler

The West Lincoln wrestling team was in action Saturday at St. Stephens High School in the annual Indian Classic.
Senior Matt Avery wrestled his way through the championship defeating Chapel Hill’s Sam Nackman in the 140-pound weight class.
At the conclusion of the tournament, Avery was awarded Most Outstanding Wrestler, as voted on by the coaches.
At the 119-pound weight class, Matt Whittle placed second losing to Eric Webster of Newton Conover, 12-6.
The Rebels had five wrestlers to finish in third place. Brian Sailors, Jack Wombough, Payden Houser, Logan Shronce, and Clay Heafner each won in the consolation finals to earn the bronze medal.
James Pearson and Randall Neal placed fourth for West Lincoln. This helped the Rebels place fifth as a team.
The Rebels traveled to East Gaston on Tuesday night to take on the Warriors. West Lincoln was defeated 45-31, handing West Lincoln their fourth loss of the season.
They will be back in action this Saturday at Mt. Tabor High School for the Twin City Rumble.

North Lincoln
Lake Norman beat North Lincoln 74-61 Tuesday night behind 20 points from Michael Lawson.
Kenny Bethea had a game-high 24 points, while teammate Alex Loftin finished with 18 points in the losing cause.
The Knights fall to 1-3 on the young season.
In women’s play, the Lady Knights fell to Lake Norman 58-52.
Pacing North Lincoln was Kayla Alexander with 17 points, while Kathryn Thorne and Alyssa Lowe both finished with 10 points.

West Lincoln basketball
West Iredell defeated West Lincoln 65-45 Friday night.
Michael Watkins paced the Warriors with a game-high 14 points.
Brandon Friday led the Rebels with 12 points, while Daniel Payseur added eight.
“I really have no explanation for the way we played. I guess we just have to forget about that one and move on,” West Lincoln head coach Chad Wright said of his team’s 31 turnovers.
West Lincoln committed 20 turnovers in the first half alone.
The Rebels (1-2) will look to rebound versus Maiden in a home contest Thursday. West has already defeated the Blue Devils once on the season.

North Lincoln Wrestling
North Lincoln fell 35-33 to Bunker Hill (11-3) Tuesday night.
Aaron Licourt (119) and Matt Smith (135) recorded pins for the Knights. Chad Saunders, Jacob Smith and Greg Fincham recorded wins in the narrow loss.
