West rebounds from loss

The West Lincoln Rebel’s 2005-2006 wrestling season began last Tuesday night at Freedom High School with a disappointing loss to the Patriots in a tie match.
The Patriots took the early lead when Yue Her, 112 lbs., defeated Travis Hullette with a score of 13-4. The Rebels were quick to answer when 119 lbs., Matt Whittle pinned John Eskridge in the second period.
The next three matches belonged to the Patriots when J.D. Foote, Dustin Houser, and Tyrell Tate defeated Lucas Quinteras, Zeke Elmore, and Payden Houser respectively. This put the Patriots ahead 19-6, but the Rebels wouldn’t let that stop them.
Matt Avery, Tyler Wilfong, Logan Shronce, and James Pearson stepped up for the Rebels. Each of these wrestlers came out strong with a win to put the Rebels back ahead 25-19.
At the 171 lbs. and 189 lbs. weight class, John Collette and Dallas Winters scored wins for Freedom over Randall Neal and Tyler Carpenter giving them the edge going into the last three matches of the night 28-25.
West Lincoln’s Ethan Peterson pinned Chinue Yang in the first period to boost the Rebels back ahead 31-25. Then, Clay Heafner defeated Andrew Priquette 5-4 with only one more match to go. With West Lincoln in front 34 -25, Brett Boston of Freedom pinned Chris Long to tie the match.
In wrestling, a tiebreaker is broken by criteria. This match was decided on the sixth criteria. Freedom had the most first takedowns scored giving them a point to put them ahead 35 – 34.
On Saturday, the Rebels were back in action at the 2nd annual West Lincoln Round Robin. They hosted AC Reynolds, Chatham Central, Hickory, North Gaston, and Pisgah.
The Rebels started out the morning by defeating Pisgah 66-15 in the first round. West Lincoln’s Chris Long, Matt Whittle, Zeke Elmore, Payden Houser, Matt Avery, Tyler Wilfong, Logan Shronce, and Ethan Peterson scored pins for the Rebels during this match.
In the second round, the Rebels faced the defending 1A state champions, Chatham Central. West Lincoln defeated the Bears 60-24 with key wins coming from James Pearson, Johnny Walker, Clay Heafner, Brian Sailors, Matt Whittle, Payden Houser, Matt Avery, Tyler Wilfong, and Logan Shronce who all scored pins for West Lincoln.
After dominating the first two rounds, the Rebels faced AC Reynolds in the third round of the day. This proved to be a seesaw battle between the two. The Rebels became the victor with a score of 44 -30. Matt Whittle, Payden Houser, Tyler Wilfong, Logan Shronce, James Pearson, Ryan Rhodes, Randall Neal, and Clay Heafner won for the Rebels.
In the fourth round of the day, West Lincoln continued to control their matches as they defeated Hickory High School 71-12 to move on to face the only other undefeated team in the tournament. Pinning for West Lincoln were Matt Avery, Logan Shronce, Ethan Beck, Tyler Carpenter, and Clay Heafner.
In the last match of the day, the wrestlers came out fired up and ready to face North Gaston. They defeated the Wildcats 46 -27 to end their day at 5 – 0. Zeke Elmore, Payden Houser, Matt Avery, Tyler Wilfong, Logan Shronce, James Pearson, Ryan Rhodes, and Clay Heafner came out victorious for the Rebels.
After the match, Matt Avery, one of West Lincoln’s team captains stated, “I think as a team we came together well to rebound from Tuesday’s disappointing loss. We are ready to move on and face our challenges that lie ahead this season.
