Mustangs win first match
The East Lincoln Lady Mustangs tennis team beat Newton-Conover 6-3 Thursday.
Candace Hall, Madeline Jones, Laura Estridge, Kristin Parker and Maria Robledo all recorded singles victories.
Mandy Werth and Robledo recorded the lone doubles win, winning 9-8 (10-8).
Head coach Mike Davis was happy with his team’s play.
“This was a very good win for us. We have a relatively inexperienced team, but the girls showed tremendous toughness by pulling out some very close matches,” he said.
“The senior girls (Laura, Kristin, Maria and Mandy) all stepped up and contributed important wins today,” he added.
“The girls have been working very hard and continue to improve—we’re very pleased with our progress so far.”

East Lincoln volleyball
The East Lincoln Lady Mustangs beat East Gaston in JV and varsity action Monday.
Dana Griffin, who missed half of last season with an injured knee, provided an inspirational boost, by returning to the court.
The varsity won 3-0; 25-20, 25-13, 25-18. Griffin was 6-0 serving with five digs.
Other standouts were: Lauren Sharpe with 11 kills, two blocks, Kassi Henry with 10 kills, two blocks and three digs and Krista Abernathy with 28 assists, four digs, three blocks, including two roofs.
The JV Mustangs picked up their first win on the young season, winning 2-0; 25-12, 25-22.
Standouts were: Megan Bowles with five aces and one kill, Amber Bowles with two aces and one kill, Kendra Day with three aces and one assist and Neely Reid with three assists, one kill and one ace.
The varsity record is even at 2-2, while the JV squad is at 1-3.
Last Wednesday, East Lincoln beat North Gaston 3-1;25-23, 24-26, 25-16, 25-17.
Standouts were: Kassi Henry with 17 kills, three aces, five digs, Kristi Abernathy with 30 assists and two aces, Lauren Sharpe with nine kills, two aces, three blocks, two roofs and four digs.
Katie Reel had three kills and six aces.
Last Thursday, both teams lost to Lake Norman. The varsity fell 3-1;16-25, 27-25, 26-24, 25-20. The JV fell 2-0; 25-11, 25-14.

Lincolnton tennis
The Lincolnton Lady Wolves evened their record (1-1) on the young season with a dominating 9-0 win over North Gaston Monday.
Shelley Stevens, Angela Graham, Anna Kiser, Betty Royster, Sheldon McCurry and Lauren Fortkort all nabbed singles’ victories.
Stevens/Graham, Kiser/Royster and McCurry/Fortkort each won their doubles match.
Natalie Wiseman won 6-0 in exhibition play.
