Bob Elliott is phasing out.
The executive director of the Lake Norman Marine Commission has handed over his title to Ron Smith, a former planning director for Iredell County and former executive director.
The switch was made at Monday night’s marine commission meeting.
“I’m looking forward to it, I have done it before, it’s a good organization,†said Smith, a resident of Mooresville, in a recent interview.
Smith, who was not present at the meeting, served as executive director for the commission between 1998 and 2000.
He served as planning director for Iredell County from 2000 to 2004.
Elliott said he is glad that Smith is taking over because he has a good background.
“Ron is really sharp, he has county experience and marine commission experience,†Elliott said.
Elliott will serve as assistant director for a year to help train Smith.
He will also write a manual for the marine commission which will consist of statutes and ordinances.
Elliott has been involved with the marine commission for eight years. He has been chairman of the board and served as executive director for a year-and-a-half. He said he thought it was time to let someone else take over.
“Ron’s learning curve is shorter than anybody’s,†Elliott said.
In other business, the commission approved four rafting events.
The Shake the Lake event will take place from noon to 7 p.m. at Midtown Sundries in Cornelius on Aug. 20. Radio station 99.7, the Fox and LKNFun.com will be present. The Mitch Glenn Band, the Reaganomics, Ultravibe and Smilin Dogs will entertain.
Rock N’ Roll Games will take place on Aug. 27, starting at 2 p.m. at the Exit 36 Grill in Mooresville.
The two other rafting events approved are private parties.
