Optimists to hold tourney

The West Lincoln Optimist Club will host a Coach Pitch Tournament and canned food drive in early August.
The tournament will take place Aug. 5, 6, and 7 at the West Lincoln Optimist Park.
Kids ages 7 and 8 can participate, said Jeff Adams with the club. With the coach pitch format, a kid pitcher stands behind the coach, who pitches the game.
There are currently seven teams signed up to play, and Adams said he expects that number to grow to eight to 10.
Brackets will be set up at the first of the week, so anyone interested in playing should register soon.
All teams are guaranteed a minimum of three games. Trophies will be awarded to the first and second place teams, and participation certificates will be given to all the others.
All teams and visitors should bring a canned food donation.
A lot of the plans are still in the works, but organizers are hoping for a successful event.
“If this goes over well, maybe this will be something we can do annually,” said Amy Adams, a volunteer with the club.
Jeff Adams said he’s not yet sure what agency will receive the canned food, but he’s checking with churches and area ministries. The club might also go through the Recreation Department to distribute the donations.
Christian Ministry of Lincoln County has voiced a need for cooking oil, grits, oat mill, bar soap, sugar, laundry detergent and saltine crackers, so the club hopes to help out with those needs as well.
The team that donates the most food will be recognized, either with an award or a possible buy depending on the number of teams signed up.
“One of the reasons we are doing the canned food drive is that the community has been so generous to us during our ball season,” Amy Adams said. “We had four teams go to state tournaments this year. The canned food drive is one way that we can say thank you in return to help others.”
People who aren’t planning on attending the games can still help by dropping off donations between 2 and 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7 at the park.
Tournament registration is $75.
