Former E. Lincoln soccer star leads West team to win
Former East Lincoln goalkeeper Erin Smith recorded two saves and allowed one goal as the West beat the East 2-1 in the 2005 North Carolina Coaches Association Women’s Soccer All-Star game Tuesday at UNCG.
Smith, the Big South 3A Conference goalkeeper of the year last year, played all 80 minutes as the West won the game for the second straight year.
The game was the final high school competition for Smith, who is headed to the College of Charleston in the fall on an athletic scholarship.
Whitney Berry of Hibriten scored twice to lead the West on offense. Berry, who is going to Wake Forest in the fall, scored the game-winner in the 73rd minute off an assist from Brittany Bolick.
The West dominated most of the play, outshooting the East 12-5 and holding a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
