The North Lincoln Knights have received plenty of exposure in local papers in the first two years of existence.
Some people believe the Knights have received too much.
For those that have, take into consideration that the Knights have won conference championships in wrestling, men’s track and field, golf and men’s swimming.
In addition to team championships, the Knights finished as Southern Foothills’ runner-ups in baseball, softball, volleyball, women’s swimming and women’s tennis.
Thursday, North Lincoln Athletic Director Mark Lackey announced his school won the 2005 Wachovia Cup for the Southern Foothills.
The cup is an award given to the high school in each conference that earns the most points.
The higher a team finishes, the more points they receive.
For example, for winning a conference championship, the high school would get 10 points.
The Knights edged out Hendersonville 224-214 for first place.
Polk County finished in third and Maiden finished fourth with 168 points.
While North Lincoln received the Wachovia Cup on Lackey’s watch, he’s quick to deflect any credit.
“What a great thing that is for the school. All the credit has to go to the athletes because they’re the ones that play the game,†he said. “I would like to compliment our coaching staff for the fine job they did with our athletes,†he added.
As a result of winning the award; the Knights will receive an award to be displayed.
Lackey believes it will be a banner to hang in the school’s gym.
No matter what the award is, it will give all athletes that participated this year something to be proud of and to reflect on when they graduate and thereafter.
“It will bring back memories for a lot of kids that gave a lot of effort and dedication to their sport,†Lackey said.
Perhaps the main thing Lackey is proud of is the cohesive effort.
“It’s not a reflection of just one team, but every team contributes to it.â€
The highest finishes in the state were turned in by the softball team, which finished third in North Carolina and the golf team, which turned in a fifth-place finish.
