Relay for Life kicks off Friday at ELHS

The 2005 annual East Lincoln Relay for Life kicks off this weekend at East Lincoln High School.
Patsy Black, chairwoman of the relay, said the goal for this year is $205,000.
Relay for Life is the signature fund raiser for the American Cancer Society. Teams from schools, churches, businesses and other organizations set up camp for the entire night and field walkers who lap the field non-stop.
Last year the East Lincoln Relay raised more than $200,000. Combined with the Lincolnton Relay, the total sum raised by Lincoln County came to more than $350,000, an effort ranking the county the 5th in the nation in its population category.
The Lincolnton Relay is schedule May 7-8 at Lincolnton High School.
One of the new features this year at East Lincoln will be the sounding of bagpipes during the luminary ceremony.
