Messiah United Methodist Church will celebrates its 35th anniversary on Sunday, the fourth service of its Lenten renewal Celebration which has been under way this past week.
The Rev. Garland Young, who served as minister and lead the formation of the new congregation in the late 1960s and who led the move into a new facility in 1970, will preach at the 10 a.m. morning worship service. Lunch is at 11:30 a.m. and will be followed by musical presentations.
Messiah’s roots go back to three churches: Bethel United Methodist, Zion and Russell’s Chapel. Two of those sites are now used as cemeteries.
The churches came together on Palm Sunday, 1970, exactly 35 years ago from Sunday’s celebration, according the current pastor, the Rev. Linda Stack Morgan.
The church will also cut the ribbon on the first children’s playground, recently equipped with swing sets.
The church is located at 4102 W. Hwy. 27 in Lincolnton.
