The West Lincoln Rebels, who are ranked No. 1 in North Carolina, squared off against the Bandys Trojans Tuesday night.
The Midwest 2A Conference match up was ironic in the fact the Trojans are ranked No. 2 in the state.
Rebels’ head coach Butch Ross and his wrestlers were able to defeat Bandys 30-25. This huge win moved the Rebels one step closer to winning the conference title.
West Lincoln jumped out to a quick lead when Zac Elmore pinned Matt Smith in the second period. Then, Jeremy Pearson, 125 lb. wrestler, had a much-needed win over B.J. Little, defeating him 12-8.
At the 130 lb. weight class, Matt Avery was able to hold off Matt Stogner for a 6-4 decision. This put the Rebels up 12-0. Zeb Elmore added to the lead when he defeated Jerry Stogner 9-5.
The Trojans were quick to respond winning the next five matches and jumping out to a 22-15 lead over the Rebels. The West Lincoln wrestlers would not let this get them down, they responded by winning the last four of the last five matches of the night.
Daniel Soto decisioned Justin Houston 9-4 in a key match up to get the Rebels rolling again.
Keane Steele made it a one-point match when he defeated Markley Morrison 3-1 at 215 pounds.
Antonio Rojo followed with a pin over Taylor Turbyfill to put the Rebels ahead 27-22.
John Harkey sealed the win when he decisioned Ryan White 12-11.
Ross was pleased with his team’s effort against their formidable foe.
“It was a real hard-fought match on both sides. Both teams wrestled well and the boys really stepped it up tonight and beat a very good team.”
The Rebels will be wrestling at 7 p.m. on Friday at home versus Shelby.
What was the biggest kehy of match according to Ross?
“We got started off right; the boys knew what we had to. We put Bandys down 15-0 right off the bat and it took the wind out of them.”
The Rebels, 27-0, 3-0 in the Midwest 2A, have four conference matches remaining, with the toughest being the Golden Lions on Friday.
“It was a lot of emotion and pressure last night. I hope the boys can continue at the level they’re at, without an emotional letdown,” Ross said of the rest of the season.
