You better act quick; this delicious spring weather isn’t going to last long what with it being January and all, and now is an excellent time to take the kids to the playground or park or shed some of those holiday pounds at the nearest tennis and basketball courts.
One of the best places to enjoy the outdoors in this area is South Mountain State Park in Burke County, which has just recently reopened.
The park had been closed due in part to repairs needed after Tropical Depression Frances. Because the repairs have not been completed, detours will be in place on several trails.
The park includes elevations up to 3,000 feet, a waterfall dropping 80 feet and more than 40 miles of trails. One can enjoy horseback riding, trout fishing, mountain biking and picnicking in the great outdoors.
Park hours are from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. throughout the winter. It is closed on state holidays.
